THE MONTESSORI PHILOSOPHY
The Montessori Method
The Montessori Method is based on the philosophy of
education developed by Dr. Maria Montessori. It is based
on the premise that the child wants to learn, and independence
and order are key. Followers of the Montessori
Method understand that a child will learn naturally if
put in an environment containing the proper materials.
These sensorial materials are suited to a child's abilities and natural interests.
They are set up by an observer (teacher) who intervenes only when individual
help is needed. Montessori educators try to reverse the traditional system of
an active teacher instructing a passive class. Maria Montessori came up with
this method from observing the development of children. She found that
children have sensitive periods. These are very crucial times when they must
learn independence and order to understand the world before them. This
method fosters the child's natural love of learning.
