THE PRIMARY COMMUNITY
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Preschool: Three to Six Years Old

“It is through appropriate work and activities that the character of the child is transformed. Work influences his development in the same way that food revives the vigor of a starving man. We observe that a child occupied with matters that awaken his interest seems to blossom, to expand, evincing undreamed of character traits; his abilities give him great satisfaction, and he smiles with a sweet and joyous smile.”
– Maria Montessori

The Primary Community

The Alden Montessori Primary Community offers preschool children 3 to 6 years of age the opportunity to explore their environment while striving towards independence, self-awareness, self-discipline, respect for each other and a deep love for learning.

The Montessori Primary program is an opportunity to nurture the childʼs individual development within the context of a group setting. The child will emerge with a set of skills – social, emotional, and academic – while more importantly knowing how to function within a group.

Children have extraordinary powers of the mind, as they possess a once-in-a-lifetime ability to truly absorb information and concepts from their surroundings, like a sponge. Children learn by doing with their own hands. Independence, coordination, order, self-discipline and concentration are developed. Children work individually and cooperatively with materials that engage their curiosity.

Children in our primary environment are engaged peacefully and purposefully in a wide range of activities. We support the childʼs natural drive for independence by encouraging him to choose activities of interest and concentrate without interruption. All the while, the teacher is giving academic presentations to independent students or small groups based on independent academic levels while also meeting the needs of the whole group.

The children learn conflict resolution, to act politely in all situations, and learn to be kind and helpful to their friends. The result is a cohesive community of young children.

The teacher in the primary classroom environment is a trained professional, Montessori certified for the primary age group. There is also an assistant who works alongside the teacher, helping to make the classroom a harmonious environment for all.

For younger preschool children we have a Toddler Community for ages 18 months to 3 years.

For older elementary children we have an Elementary Community for ages 6 to 9 years.
